TWO NIGERIAN JOURNALISTS WIN CNN AWARDS

Oluwatoyosi Ogunseye, editor of The Punch on Sunday, and Tolu Ogunlesi, a freelancer, were among the winners at the 2013 CNN/MultiChoice Africa Journalist of the Year Awards ceremony, which has just ended in at the Cape Town International Convention, Cape Town, South Africa .
Ogunseye won the prize for the Environment Category, while Ogunlesi claimed the award for the Business Category.
The most coveted prize, the CNN/MultiChoice Africa Journalist of the Year Award, was claimed by Msindisi Fengu and Yandisa Monakali of South Africa’s Daily Dispatch.
Their entry, Hostels of Shame, exposed the dire infrastructure in schools around their country’s Eastern Cape Province.
Ogunseye’s winning entry, The Rich Also Cry, exposed the harmful effects of steel production on the residents of an upscale Lagos neighbourhood.
Ogunlesi won his category with a report, Eko Atlantic City: A Mammoth New Development On The Coastline of Lagos.

GEJ urges Super Eagles to Perform well today

President Goodluck Jonathan Saturday paid the Super Eagles a visit during their training for today's World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia and wished the Eagles beat their hosts to put themselves in a good steed to qualify for Brazil 2014.President Jonathan who was in Ethiopia for the African Union head of government extraordinary meeting in Addis Ababa stated that he was optimistic that the Eagles will make the World Cup, because the team have shown character.“Surely you will make it; the spirit is there. I wish you success. It is a determining match. Definitely we have been going to the World Cup, but this year we are not just going to the World Cup, we will make an impact. The world will begin to know that we have arrived as a nation. We will give you all the encouragement required. Thank you for what you are doing for us,” Jonathan said.Nigeria Football Federation president, Aminu Maigari assured the President that the Eagles will make good their qualification for the World Cup. “I assure you that we will be able to deliver and we will deliver. We will do our best. We have a good team. Goodluck Jonathan is the only President who has created time amidst his tight schedule to be with the Super Eagles twice. This is the biggest motivation and we will make you proud. We will be in Brazil,” he said.The Eagles arrived in the early hours of Saturday aboard a chartered Ethiopian Airlines flight and were received by Nigerian delegation, who have been on ground in Addis Ababa as well as top officials of the Ethiopia Football Federation (EFF).

Renowned Nollywood actor, Kayode Dosumu, well known as Pa Kasumu, is not in the best of health at the moment. The man is dejected and is fighting for survival at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where he's receiving treatment.

We learnt that he is being treated for heart related disease, which is affecting his sight and needs nothing less than N12million to undergo a full treatment to make him survive the battle with death.

It's been gathered from a report that efforts are now being made to save him from dying.

Our very own Genevieve Nnaji has upped the ante. According to Nigeriafilms.com the Nollywood actress has just acquired a sprawling mansion in Parkview, Ikoyi area of Lagos.

The mother of one and notable thespian purchased the luxurious home in high profile property around that area valued by property merchants to be nothing less than over N150m, to tell a story with a title, 'Hard Work Pays'.

People in the know revealed that Genevieve, who is recently having an issue with the publishers of Yes Magazine over an interview they published a few weeks ago, is now a proud owner of three expensive and posh houses within the aficionados lair.

It was recently reported that she built a multi-million naira mansion for her parents in Lekki, and has another mansion in Oniru Estate, and now she has gotten another one in Parkview Estate.

Though, many of her colleagues said it's not movie that is fetching her that much to be buying house like that; after all, she is not the only one in the industry who is leaving large.

And also that she is not a delight of corporate organisations like that because of her attitude to be considered for endorsement except a few ones she did in the past. Well they're no photos yet.

ELEPHANT KILLED BY TRAIN IN INDIA

An adult male elephant was Friday mowed down by a train in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, a forest official said.The incident comes a day after a jumbo with its head chopped off was found also in the same district.

The incident happened in Mongpong, located on the fringe of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, when the Siliguri-Alipurduar Express hit the jumbo.

“The incident happened Friday morning. There is a need to further restrict the speed limit of the trains on the Siliguri-Alipurduar stretch. We are discussing on lowering the speed limit to below 25 km,” said Chief Wildlife Warden N.C.Bahuguna.

Since 2004, when the tracks on the 163-km long Siliguri-Alipurduar route were converted to broad gauge, speeding trains have mowed nearly 40 elephants.

Following the spate of mowing down incidents, in 2010 the speed of the trains was been restricted to 50 km.

The railway lines on the stretch pass through five forests-Buxa, Jaldapara, Gorumara, Chapramari and Mahananda.

Gunmen kidnap Cross River Deputy Gov’s father and uncle

Gunmen in the wee hours of Friday kidnapped the octogenarian father of the deputy governor of Cross River State, Chief Essien Cobham, from his home in Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area of the state.
An uncle of the deputy governor, whose name could not be immediately ascertained, was equally said to have been abducted by the kidnappers.
The kidnappers were said to have entered and left the town through the Calabar waterways on speedboats at about 2am and operated for over an hour.
Our correspondent, who visited Creek Town on Friday, learnt that the kidnapers had initially burst into the residence of the brother of the Director-General of the Directorate of Security Service, Mr. Ita Ekpenyong, but only succeeded in vandalising the building as the brother, identified as Chief Asuquo Aka, was not at home.
A source, who preferred anonymity, said the heavily armed men accompanied by Alsatian dogs came in from the Bakassi area of the waterways with two flying boats.
He said, “They broke the wall of the deputy governor’s father’s house to gain access to the building. They also vandalised the building where the younger brother of the director-general of SSS is staying. The house is believed to be a family compound. But they faced stiff resistance from security agents.”
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Hogan Bassey, confirmed the incidence but refused to give details for security reasons

FG says: Crashed Associated Airlines plane was technically unfit

Preliminary readout and analysis by the Accident Investigation Bureau on the Associated Airlines plane that crashed in Lagos on Thursday last week have revealed that the aircraft’s flaps and right engine were not technically fit before take-off.
The bureau said the crew, prior to departure, expressed some concerns about the plane.
Despite the concerns, the crew still flew the aircraft, which was conveying the corpse of the former governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Agagu. The plane eventually crashed and killed over 15 persons.
The Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer, AIB, Capt. Muhtar Usman, who spoke at the headquarters of the bureau in Abuja on Friday, said, “The Flight Data Recorder contains several engine related parameters which the AIB is studying. At this point, we can state that the right engine appears to be producing considerable less thrust than the left engine.
“A warning configuration setting suggests that the flaps were not in the correct position for take-off and there is some evidence that the crew may have chosen not to use the flaps for take-off.”
